James Henry Trotter, the protagonist of the story, loses his parents at the age of four when a rhinoceros eats them. He lives with his aunts, Spiker and Sponge, who ill treat him all the time, give him very little to eat and makes him sleep on the attic floor. One day he meets a strange man who gives him green crocodile tongues and asks him to make a portion with them adding ten hair from his head. On the way back home, he stumbles and the crocodile tongues fall onto a peach tree. The tree starts giving peach fruits which it had never done before. The wicked aunts start making money on them. One peach grows enormously big, almost the size of the house. James ventures into it and gets into the peach stone where he finds talking arthropods and an earthworm. The giant peach rolls off the mountain and thus starts their adventure journey till they reach New York City.
